January 12, 2012: Alpine Shredding And Cheese Recalls Edelweiss, Brennan’s, And Queso Cheeses

On December 31st and January 3rd, Alpine Shredding and Cheese Conversion Company announced a total of three recalls on different types, or brands, of cheeses: Edelweiss, Brennan’s, and Queso, because it may be contaminated by the bacteria, Listeria.  Listeria can cause listeriosis, initial symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If the infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions.

All three recalls are in place because another brand of cheese tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes that was packaged at the same facility as the Alpine cheeses.  The cheese that tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes is Green Cedar Dairy’s All Natural Ackawi and Chive Cheeses from Michigan.  So far, there have been two reported illnesses from the contaminated cheese.

More details on each Alpine recall can be found here: Edelweiss Recall, Brennan’s Recall, Queso Recall.
