January 15, 2013: Additional Smoked Seafood Recalls

On January 7th and January 9th respectively, Giant Food Stores and Martin’s Food Stores, and Delfish issued precautionary recalls of some of their seafood products because of the threat of a Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Giant and Martin’s recalled three varieties of smoked salmon that is sold at each store including: “Nathan’s Nova Salmon, 3 o.z., UPC 7303080368, all sell by dates * Nathan’s Nova Salmon, 8 o.z., UPC 7303080369, all sell by dates * Lascco Smoked Salmon, 3 o.z., UPC 7284001703, all sell by dates”, according to the FDA.

Delfish expanded a recall that was already in place to include a wider range of production dates, which first ranged from September 6th – October 18th, but now range from August 23nd  – December 1st 2012.  The recalled seafood was distributed to CA, NC, VA, OH, MA, IL, FL, GA, TX, DE, NJ, NY, PA, WA and Puerto Rico.  The FDA has provided more details on the Delfish recall which can be found at: Delfish Expanded Recall.

Initial symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If the infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions.  Infected pregnant women may experience only mild flu-like symptoms; however, infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, premature delivery, stillbirth, or septicemia (blood infection) or meningitis in the newborn.

12/28/12: Smoked Salmon Recall For Potential Listeria Contamination

Smoked Salmon Recall Announcement – On December 28, 2012, Delifish S.A. recalled lots 249 to 291 of cold smoked salmon products due to the threat of Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Smoked Salmon Recall Information

The recalled lots were distributed to 11 states including: CA, VA, OH, IL, FL, GA, TX, DE, NJ, NY, PA, and Puerto Rico.  Delifish lists the smoked salmon recall products under the following brand names: Black Bear of the Black Forest Smoked Salmon, Food Service Cold Smoked Salmon Trim, Einstein Darn Good, Food Service Whole Smoked, Silver Source Smoked Salmon, Royal Fjord Smoked Toppers, and Royal Fjord Sliced Smoked Salmon Loin.  All recalled products were manufactured in between September 5th and October 17th 2012.

Michael’s Gourmet Salmon Recall – On November 19, 2012, Michael’s Gourmet Delicacies of Miami, FL, recalled Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon batch #1443, because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled salmon was sold in Whole Foods stores throughout Florida during the period of June 12, 2012 to November 16, 2012.

Spence & Co Nova Lox Recall News – On November 9, 2012, Spence & Co from Brockton, MA, initiated a recall for its New York-Style Nova Lox, because the product may be contaminated with Listeria.

The recall affects a total of 1,563 packs of Spence & co Ltd New York Style Nova Lox with Lot Number 9720704.

The recalled product was distributed as follows:

  • Through Distributors in IL, MO, NJ, MA and in the Detroit area between 9.26.12 and 10.5.12

It has also been distributed to the following retail stores

  • Earthfare: AL, NC, GA, SC, TN, FL & OH between 9.28.12 and 10.5.12.
  • Shaws Supermarkets: New England on 9.28.12. (expiration date 10.21.12)
  • Roche Bros: MA on 9.26.12 (expiration date 10.19.12).
  • Fresh Markets: In FL, GA, KY, IL, AL, AZ, OH, TN, SC, VA, IN, MI, OK, and KS.

October 24: Dole Salad Recall – American Brand Bagged Salad Recalled

Dole Salad Recall News– On October 17, 2012, Dole Fresh Vegetables initiated a recall for its American Brand 12 oz. salad bags due to concerns of Listeria monocytogenes contamination. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recalled salad bags were distributed to ten U.S. states including: Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

Bags of the Dole recalled salad are coded with A275208A or B, UPC code of 7143000933, and Best Used by date of October 17, 2012.
