Listeriosis

Eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon, but potentially fatal infectious disease. Listeriosis affects primarily pregnant women and their fetuses, newborns, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths.

Listeriosis symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If the infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions.
