Cantaloupe Linked To Listeria Outbreak

Listeria Outbreak News – According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, cantaloupe has been identified as the likely source a multistate Listeria outbreak.  At least nine Listeria infections, or listeriosis, have been linked to the outbreak, which includes two potentially related illnesses in Texas and one in Nebraska.  The source of the contaminated cantaloupes has not yet been identified, so a recall has not been issued.

Listeria or L. monocytogenes is a type of bacterium capable of causing potentially fatal infections, particularly in the elderly and immunocompromised.  Listeria infection can also lead to miscarriage and still birth.  Healthy adults are less likely to develop the illness.  Listeriosis Symptoms can include fever and muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, convulsions and diarrhea.

Public health officials previously reported that all of the Colorado Listeria cases have resulted in hospitalization and two of the victims have died.  One of the patient deaths was included in the nine cases which are being investigated as part of the outbreak.

Because this is a multistate outbreak, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, and the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, FDA, as well as other public health officials will be working together to identify the source of the contaminated cantaloupes and additional listeriosis cases linked to the outbreak.
