After a series of recalls connected to a deadly multi-state Listeria outbreak, Blue Bell Creameries has become the subject of investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ). The investigation’s main interest is in examining the executives of Blue Bell Creameries, and their response to the Listeria contamination of many of their frozen treat products.

On April 20, 2015, the company initiated a complete recall of all products.

The outbreak, which has been linked to several Blue Bell ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbet and other frozen treats, has reportedly resulted in ten cases of Listeriosis, including three cases which have resulted in death.

Listeria Information

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that there are 1,591 cases of foodborne listeriosis, resulting in 255 deaths, in the U.S. each year. Newborns, pregnant women, older adults, and those individuals with weakened immune systems are at greatest risk for developing listeriosis.

Listeriosis symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If the infection spreads to the central nervous system, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions.

September 9, 2015: Appeeling Fruit Products Recalled After Listeria Contamination

On September 9, 2015, Appeeling Fruit Inc. recalled consumer packages of freshly sliced apples due to the product’s potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The recall is being initiated after the company was informed that an environmental sample taken in the production facility as part of a routine sampling program tested positive for the bacteria.

The foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacterium capable of causing is a serious and sometimes fatal infection. Newborns, pregnant women, older adults, and those individuals with weakened immune systems are at greatest risk for developing listeriosis and experiencing complications. Although less common, individuals not belonging to one of these high risk groups can also contract listeriosis. The recall affected fresh sliced apple packages with Best-if-Used-by dates of September 14, 2015 and September 29, 2015, that had been shipped to Florida, Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania between August 31, 2015 and September 2, 2015. Product recall details can be found on the chart below.

August 31, 2015: Over Nine Thousand Cases of Frozen Corn Recalled Due to Listeria Concerns

Following the discovery of Listeria monocytogenes in a sample taken from a package of Bonduelle USA frozen corn, Bonduelle USA Inc. has issued a widespread recall. To date 9,335 cases of frozen corn have been recalled. While the contaminated product was originally found in Tennessee, potentially dangerous frozen cut corn products were distributed to stores in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Massachusetts, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana. Consumption of the recalled corn may result in illness, particularly listerosis.
