Listeria is a bacterium capable of causing a serious and life-threatening infection known as listeriosis. Older adults, individuals with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women are at greatest risk for developing listeriosis and suffering Listeria complications. If a pregnant woman experiences a Listeria infection, bacteria may cross the placenta causing a miscarriage, premature delivery, still birth, or an infection in the new born.

Although less common, individuals not belonging to one of these high risk groups can contract listeriosis as well.
