January 31, 2009: Illinois Listeriosis Cases Confirmed In 3 Pregnant Illinois Women

Illinois Listeriosis Warning – The Illinois Department of Public Health is warning pregnant women and individuals with weakened immune systems to avoid cheeses made from raw milk, following three confirmed cases of listeriosis. Listeriosis is an infection caused by the foodborne pathogen Listeria.

Illinois Listeriosis Information

Three pregnant women in Chicago and Cook County tested positive for Listeria in late November and December of 2008, after eating different kinds of soft cheeses. Two of the pregnant women suffered miscarriages, and the third woman’s baby tested positive for the infection.
