January 25, 2011: State Garden Recalls Salad Mixes Due To Listeria Concerns

State Garden, Inc. of Chelsea, MA, has issued a recall for all of its salad products produced on January 4, 2011, because the products may be contaminated with the foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes.

According to a State Garden press release, the recalled salads bear the trace back code numbers 45693 and 45703. The trace back codes are usually located in the upper right hand corner of the labels and bags. The recalled salads will also have a “best if used by” date of no later than January 15, 2011, for either trace back code.

The salad products subject to recall were distributed to various East Coast retailers under the brand names: Gold Quality, Hannaford, Natures Place, Natures Promise, Roche Bros, Northeast Fresh, Noreast Fresh, Olivia’s Organics, Signature, and Wegmans. Please see Listeria Salad Recall for the Jan. 21, 2011, list of recalled salad products.

A Listeria infection is referred to as listeriosis.  Listeriosis symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, and, occasionally, gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea or diarrhea. If the Listeria infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions.

Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness; however, Listeria infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, premature delivery, stillbirth, or septicemia (blood infection) and meningitis in the newborn.

Signs of illness typically appear from 3- 4 weeks following the consumption of Listeria contaminated food. However, symptoms can develop from within one week to 90 days after exposure to Listeria. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, a blood or spinal fluid test (to cultivate the bacteria) will confirm listeriosis.
