June 14, 2012: Golden Glen Creamery Issues Recall Of Cheddar Because of Listeria Concern

On June 11th, Golden Glen Creamery, of Bow, WA recalled Red Pepper with Onion & Garlic Cheddar because it may be contaminated with the food borne bacterium, Listeria monocytogenes.  The recalled cheese was produced back in August 2011.  The company believes that 124 pounds of the recalled cheese was sold between March 1st and June 7th of this year.

The cheddar was sold at farmers markets throughout Skagit, Snohomish and King Counties; as well as to retailers in Washington State and Oregon.  The recalled cheese has a three digit batch code of “887” with a label that reads:  “Medium Cheddar – Red Pepper with Onion & Garlic", "GOLDEN GLEN CREAMERY" and "Natural handcrafted cheese produced by the Jensen Ladies".  It was sold in packages ranging from 1/3 to 1/2 of a pound.

Listeria can cause the illness listeriosis.  Listeriosis symptoms include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If the infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions.
