About Listeria and Listeria Infection (Listeriosis)

Listeria monocytogenes (Listeria) is a type of bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. While healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, a Listeria infection (listeriosis) can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
