Listeria Outbreak Information – The CDC announced that a total of 16 persons have been infected with outbreak-associated strains of Listeria monocytogenes according to reports from 5 states. The number of infected persons identified in each state is as follows: Colorado (11), Indiana (1), Nebraska (1), Oklahoma (1), and Texas (2) Potential listeriosis outbreak cases are being investigated in several other states. According to the CDC, the illnesses started on of after August 15, 2011.
Public health officials have linked the outbreak to eating fresh cantaloupe coming from the Rocky Ford region of Colorado. Accordingly, the CDC recommends that individuals who are at high risk for contracting listeriosis, including older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women, do not eat cantaloupes marketed as coming from the Rocky Ford region of Colorado.
