In a press release dated February 19, 2014, the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) warned consumers not to eat cheeses made by Roos Foods, because the products have tested presumptive positive for Listeria.
The DHMH will continue testing the Roos Foods’ cheeses to confirm whether or not the products are contaminated with the potentially fatal foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes; however, consumers have been warned not to eat any cheese products made by Roos Food, or foods that have been made with these cheeses.
Roos Foods cheeses include the following brands: Santa Rosa de Lima, Amigo, Mexicana, Suyapa, La Chapina, and La Purisima Crema Nica.
Eating foods contaminated with Listeria can cause a serious and sometimes fatal infection known as listeriosis. Newborns, pregnant women, older adults, and those individuals with weakened immune systems are at greatest risk for developing listeriosis. Because listeriosis can cause premature labor, premature delivery, miscarriage, stillbirth, or severe infection of newborns, it is especially important that pregnant women avoid these products. Although less common, individuals not belonging to one of these high risk groups can also contract listeriosis.
Symptoms of Listeria infection can include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If the infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions. Pregnant women may experience only mild flu-like symptoms.
