May 24, 2012: Bagged Salad Recalled Across The Nation

On May 19th, 2012, an expansion of River Ranch Fresh Food’s recall was put in effect to include retail and foodservice bagged salads because the salads have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes

Listeria monocytogenes is a pathogen that causes listeriosis, which is a serious foodborne illness.  Initial symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If the infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions.

According to the FDA, the recalled salad in the retail industry was distributed throughout the US and Canada with brand names including: River Ranch, Farm Stand, Hy-Vee, Shurfresh, and The Farmer’s Market.  The recalled salad in the foodservice industry has brand names of River Ranch and Sysco.  Both retail and foodservice salads have “Best-By” dates ranging from May 12th to May 29th of this year.
