June 6, 2009: Raw Milk From NY Dairy May Be Contaminated With Listeria

NY Raw Milk Potential Listeria Contamination Update – Consumers are being warned not to drink unpasteurized (raw) milk from Breese Hollow Dairy, Hoosick Falls, NY, because the milk may be contaminated with the potentially fatal pathogen Listeria monocytogenes.

Although Breese Hollow Dairy holds a state permit and can legally sell raw milk, routine monthly testing for the month of May, determined that the milk was contaminated by Listeria.

Breese Hollow Dairy is not permitted to sell raw milk until their milk samples no longer test positive for Listeria or any other foodborne pathogen.

The bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, can cause a fatal infection known as listeriosis. Those at risk for complications due to listeriosis are the elderly, immunocompromised, infants, and pregnant women and their fetuses.
