Roos Foods Cheese Recall Expands – New Information Provided: On February 25, 2014, Roos Foods expanded its February 23, 2014, recall to include all lots of Amigo and Mexicana brands of Requesón [part-skim ricotta in 15 oz. and 16 oz. plastic containers and all lots of Amigo, Mexicana, and Santa Rosa De Lima brands of Queso de Huerta (fresh curd cheese)]. The products were recalled for potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Roos Foods Cheese Recall Expands – Product Information

Roos Foods has recalled all lots of the following cheeses:

• Mexicana: Cuajada En Terron, Cuajada/Cuajadita Cacera, Cuajada Fresca, Queso Fresca Round, Queso Dura Viejo Hard Cheeses
• Amigo: Cuajada En Terron, Cuajada/Cuajadita Cacera, Cuajada Fresca, Queso Fresca Round, Queso Dura Viejo Hard Cheeses
• Santa Rosa De Lima: Cuajada En Terron, Cuajada/Cuajadita Cacera, Cuajada Fresca, Queso Fresca Round, Queso Dura Viejo Hard Cheeses
• Anita: Queso Fresco

The products are packaged in flexible plastic bags and rigid plastic clam shell packages in 12 oz. and 16 oz. sizes under the brand names: Mexicana, Amigo, Santa Rosa De Lima, and Anita. Consumers are cautioned to not eat the recalled cheeses.

The products were distributed through retail stores in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C.; however, public health officials have not identified the retails stores that sold the recalled cheeses. The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services did announce that a cheese sample collected at the Megamart, located at 8328 Shopper’s Square, Manassas, VA, tested positive for Listeria.

CDC Reports Roos Foods Listeria Outbreak Link

The Roos Foods recall was prompted after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on February 21, 2014, that a Listeria outbreak, sickening 8 persons and causing one death, had been linked to Roos Foods soft and semi-soft cheeses. Virginia and Maryland state public health officials confirmed that samples of various Roos Foods cheeses had tested positive for the outbreak strain of Listeria.
