About Listeria

Listeria monocytogenes are a species of pathogenic bacteria found in damp environments and decaying organic matter (both vegetation and animals).  The bacteria can even survive in refrigerated environments and preserved food items. The bacteria can cause listeriosis infection, which affects people of all ages. The health implications of listeriosis can be serious and even fatal for children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. When healthy individuals are infected with listeriosis, symptoms may include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Pregnant individuals are at high risk if infected, as listeriosis can cause miscarriage and stillbirth.
