September 9, 2011: Listeria Outbreak in Colorado

According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, L. monocytogenes infections have, during the months of August and September, been detected in eight counties.  At present, a total of 13 cases have been reported.  Sadly, two deaths did occur.  The source of the outbreak as of yet is unknown.

Interestingly, the state of Colorado normally gets reports of approximately 10 cases per year.  This year there is a marked increase.  Compare this to previous years when there were only two cases per year for the past 10 years reported in the month of August.

Coincidentally, a Listeria outbreak in Colorado was reported in June of this year where two individuals died.  However, no connection has been made between the two outbreaks to date.

Symptoms of Listeria Food Poisoning, or Listeriosis:

Initial symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If the infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions.

Infected pregnant women may experience only mild flu-like symptoms; however, infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, premature delivery, stillbirth, or septicemia (blood infection) or meningitis in the newborn.

According to the FDA, onset time of serious forms of listeriosis is unknown but may range from a few days to three weeks. The onset time of gastrointestinal symptoms is unknown but is probably greater than 12 hours.
