February 6, 2013: Sprouters Northwest Recall Expanded A Second Time

Sprouters Northwest Recall Expanded – On February 6, 2013, Sprouters Northwest expanded its recall a second time to include all varieties of sprouts products, wheatgrass and pea shoots due to potential Listeria contamination. Listeria is a type of bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may also suffer from Listeria infection. Listeria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The expanded recall includes all varieties of sprouts products including 3-Bean Munchie, Alfalfa, Bean, Broccoli, Brocco Sandwich sprouts, Clover, Deli, Spicy; Wheatgrass and Pea Shoots that were distributed through January 30, 2013, in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia, Canada through retail stores and food service distribution.

The affected products are sold under the Sprouters Northwest, LifeForce and Brassica labels and are packaged in plastic clamshell containers, plastic cups, plastic trays in 3 oz., 4 oz., 5 oz.; and in plastic 1 pound, 2 pound, or 5 pound bags. The Best by Dates include all dates up to February 17, 2013.

Trader Joe’s Organic Pea Shoots (SKU 92756), packaged in a 4 oz. clamshell sold in Oregon and Washington state are also included in the expanded recall. The Best by Dates are through February 16, 2013. The Best by Date sticker can be found on the top right hand corner, front of the package.

Sprouters Northwest Recall History

Initial Recall – On January 28, 2013, Sprouters Northwest of Kent, WA, recalled 1953 pounds of alfalfa, clover, brocco sandwich sprouts, and spicy sprouts due to potential Listeria contamination.

Products were distributed from 1/10/13 to 1/18/13 in Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and British Columbia, Canada through retail stores and food service distribution chain. The recalled products are sold under the Sprouters Northwest label and are packaged in plastic clamshell containers and plastic 1 pound bags.

The problem was identified by the Washington State Department of Agriculture after product samples, collected from retail locations, tested positive for Listeria.

Expanded Recall – On February 1, 2013, Sprouters Northwest expanded their recall to include all varieties of sprouts products, wheatgrass and pea shoots due to potential Listeria contamination. The expanded recall included all varieties of sprouts products including 3-Bean Munchie, Alfalfa, Bean, Broccoli, Brocco Sandwich sprouts, Clover, Deli, Spicy; Wheatgrass and/or Pea Shoots. These products were distributed through January 30, 2013, in Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and British Columbia, Canada through retail stores and food service distribution.

The recalled products were sold under the Sprouters Northwest and LifeForce labels and are packaged in plastic clamshell containers, plastic cups, plastic trays in 3 oz., 4 oz., 5 oz.; and in plastic 1 pound, 2 pound, or 5 pound bags.

The problem was identified by the Washington State Department of Agriculture through product testing.

About Listeria

Initial symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes may include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
